During the year, the TEAM Research Laboratories, often in collaboration with industrial partners, made several breakthroughs including:
- a new stoma capping device for patients with colostomy bags
- a new surgical instrument and filling treatment for anal fistulas
- a novel silencer for colostomy bags
- a cross-linked, decellularised bladder patch for reconstructing bladder after cancer
- a decellularised blood vessel for reconstructing damaged vessels
- a cross-linked decellularised collagen paste suitable for covering non-healing ulcers
- novel skin constructs made from bioglasses and cross-linked collagen
- novel fibrinogen haemostats and sealants in powder form which are likely to prove exceptional products for stopping massive bleeding during surgery, after road accidents and in military conflicts
- adhesive patches to place over surgical wounds for example in bowel, lung and bladder reconstruction
TEAM Research also contributed to undergraduate and postgraduate workshops and courses including:
- Clinical Skills Laboratory teaching with a throughput of some 250 medical students from Imperial College Faculty of Medicine each year
- 8 microsurgical workshops attracting surgeons from all over the world for intensive training, 5 days at a time, 17 participants each
- bowel anastomosis courses, 20 participants for 3 days per course, 3 times in the year
- general surgical techniques, 25 to a course, 2 per year
- urology workshops, 2 per year, 20 surgeons per course
- male sterilisation reversal courses, 2 per year, 8 surgeons/course
- endoscopy courses, 3 days, 10 participants/course, 2 per year
- 1-day neonatal ventilation workshop, 12 per course, 4 per year.
